As we celebrate another Women’s History Month, we recognize that women and girls around the world continue to face significant challenges simply due to their gender. Despite the hardships we endure, we must not let our suffering go to waste. Instead, we should use it as motivation to continue our fight for equality, standing together with all genders until every woman and girl enjoys the rights and respect she deserves. I’m grateful for the opportunity to share my thoughts on the status of women’s rights in Harper’s Bazaar @bazaaruk You can read the full article here: https://www.harpersbazaar.com/uk/culture/culture-news/a64065132/international-womens-day-elizabeth-nyamayaro-fight-for-equality/Button

On February 20th, I lost my beloved mum, Rose. Although I don’t usually share my personal life online, the weight of this grief is unbearable. I appreciate the support of our community through your thoughts and prayers. In my African culture, we hold a beautiful belief that a child has many mothers, and that was certainly true for me. I was fortunate to be nurtured and raised by three remarkable women: my grandmother, Gogo; my Aunt Jane, whom many of you may know from my memoir; and my dearest mother, Rose. Just eight short months ago, I lost Aunt Jane unexpectedly, and now I find myself grappling with the heartbreaking reality of losing all my mothers in such a brief span. To my dearest Amai, I love you with every fiber of my being. You have taken a significant part of my soul with you. May you rest in peace until we meet again. 💔Button

THE SECRET TO MODERN FULFILLMENT We live in an era defined by technology, social media, and an insatiable quest for more–more success, more possessions, more recognition. This constant pursuit of external validation often distracts us from discovering what truly brings us joy and meaning. As a result, many of us struggle to attain real fulfillment in our lives. We end up feeling empty, disconnected, and overwhelmed by the pressure to keep up. Growing up in rural Zimbabwe I could not have envisioned that my journey would lead to this moment. What I did know, however, was that something powerful was embedded in the spirit of community that defined my village, where we understood the value of connection––and thrived because of it. In communities throughout #Africa, the timeless wisdom of #Ubuntu is cherished and passed down through generations, reminding us that “I am because we are.” This profound truth rooted in our African heritage empowers us to express our authentic selves and embrace the richness of our shared humanity. Ubuntu has profoundly influenced my perspective on my role in the world and, importantly, how I choose to contribute to it. With my new book, HUMAN SKILLS, I am passing forward the wisdom of my ancestors to you, with the hope that the enduring principles of Ubuntu will inspire transformative change in your life, just as they have indelibly transformed mine. HUMAN SKILLS powerfully reminds us that genuine fulfillment doesn’t come from the relentless pursuit of more, but from a deep understanding of ourselves and the vital connections we forge with others🙌🏾 Read book press release here: http://n.pkup.fr/rPHbYI77sButton

5 MICRO-STEPS TO BUILDING BETTER RELATIONSHIPS✨ It’s often said that a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. I did a thing today😀 Cutting down on waste during Christmas can significantly enhance the sustainability of the holiday season while being kinder to our planet. Here are 5 effective tips to minimize waste during this festive time. Check out the last picture for my creative Christmas tree😍 1. Choose a real Christmas tree instead of a plastic one, as plastic is non-biodegradable. Alternatively, consider a potted tree that can be replanted. 2. Choose eco-friendly gift wrapping. Skip single-use wrapping paper and use reusable fabric bags, scarves, or old newspapers and magazines instead. 3. Give Experience-Based Gifts: Instead of buying physical items that might go unused, choose experiences like concert tickets, cooking classes, or memberships (museum, gym, etc.). These create memorable moments without contributing to waste. 4. Make Homemade Gifts: DIY gifts are meaningful and minimize packaging waste. Consider making cookies, knitted scarves, or custom art. These gifts are personal and environmentally friendly. 5. Plan your meals during the holidays to prevent food waste. Avoid buying or cooking too much by portioning wisely. Use leftovers in soups, casseroles, or freeze them for later. Compost any food scraps if you can. Which tip will you try?Button

Words I read this week that moved me (click audio for reading) #Indelicacy by #AminaCain ––– PERSONAL MUSINGS ON THE BOOK EXCERPT This message resonates deeply with me as someone who once worked as a janitor. While pursuing my dream of becoming a humanitarian, I faced doubt from many. However, it was my commitment to my beliefs that kept me going when others said I should give up. It’s essential to remember that others’ opinions don’t define us or our potential. Your dreams and goals are uniquely yours, and you have the power to pursue them regardless of outside opinions or judgment. Stay true to who you are, trust your instincts, and keep pushing forward. You are the author of your own story, and your current situation is just a chapter, not the whole book. When negative thoughts creep in, challenge them. This week, we celebrated World Food Day 🌱💚 It’s a perfect time to reflect on how we can all contribute to a more sustainable and secure #foodsystem. Here are a few simple ways to make a difference: 1. Shop at a local farmers market: By providing direct access to fresh, locally grown produce, these markets help ensure that residents have a reliable source of nutritious food. They often offer seasonal and diverse options that can improve dietary variety and health. Moreover, farmers’ markets support local economies, helping small-scale farmers thrive. This strengthens regional food systems, making them more resilient to disruptions and ensuring a steady supply of food. 2. Reduce Food Waste: Plan your meals and use leftovers creatively to minimize waste. 3. Choose Sustainable Options: Opt for products that are ethically sourced and environmentally friendly. 4. Get Involved: Volunteer at local food banks or community gardens to help those in need. 5. Educate Yourself: Learn about food security issues and share your knowledge with others. #WorldFoodDay #FoodSecurity #SupportLocalyButton

Some memories stay with us forever. This is one of those memories for me. These photos were taken at the New York Public Library @nypl after the launch of my memoir. It was particularly poignant to return to the same venue where my virtual book tour had taken place during the pandemic. The overwhelming sense of contentment and gratitude I experienced as a first-time author is still vivid in my mind. Meeting the supportive staff and capturing precious moments in photographs while strolling through the library’s grand halls is an experience I will always treasure. The symbolism of wearing yellow, reminiscent of the beautiful African yellow sky, served as a constant reminder of the unwavering support from my #African community and allowed me to ‘carry’ their spirit with me during this phase of the tour. HAPPY INDIGENOUS PEOPLES’ DAY On this important day, my thoughts are with the Lenca people, the largest Indigenous community in Honduras, who showed me incredible hospitality during my visit a few years ago. Despite facing major climate-related difficulties such as climate shocks and hurricanes, which have severely affected food security in the region, the community graciously shared their scarce food with me and even treated me to a fantastic music and dance celebration. Let’s use this day to reflect on the impact of climate change on Indigenous communities and commit to reducing our environmental impact. Many Indigenous and rural communities, particularly subsistence farmers, are disproportionately affected by #climateshocks, which reduce food production and hinder their ability to fulfill nutritional and livelihood requirements. #IndigenousPeoplesDayButton

Happy International Women’s Day❤️ What an inspiring and empowering morning, keynoting 2 global events to celebrate #InternationalWomensDay. One of the topics we covered was HOW TO NAVIGATE ALLYSHIP. Being an ally is highly commendable! However, know that allyship is like a delicate dance with its own set of rules. One wrong move and the whole thing will blow up in your face like a powder keg. AVOID THE SAVIOR COMPLEX: Allyship isn’t about ‘saving’ your colleagues but supporting them in ways they want to be supported. While jumping to their defense when they are being unfairly treated may be tempting, please don’t do it. This can come across as undermining their ability to stand up for themselves and may be detrimental to their self-esteem. One study by a leading US foundation found that black students who received unsolicited help from white peers reported lower self-esteem about their own competence than black students who did not receive assumptive help. Instead, find the right moment outside of the situation and ask what kind of support, if any, they might need from you in future situations. If they don’t need your help, don’t be offended or try to impose yourself. Thanks, Cencora and Latham & Watkins, for hosting me🙏🏾 #IWDButton

THE POWER OF LANGUAGE Page 34 from ‘I Am a Girl from Africa’ Language is more than words; it is intrinsic to the expression of our cultures. Language allows us to show others who we are and what we stand for; to convey our values, beliefs, and customs; to build community and solidarity with people from different cultures; to dispel harmful biases, stereotypes, and myths about our communities. So, in a world of persisting racial, sexual, identity, and religious intolerance, you owe it to yourself to use your language and voice to advocate for and build a better understanding of your culture and people. CREATING A MORE OPEN WORK CULTURE Many of us know that more inclusive and open workplace cultures create more productive and innovative teams. But achieving a healthy workplace can be difficult. One great tip is to focus on improving your team meetings, because meetings are a pulse point for team culture. Begin by thinking about when you are meeting with your team, and consider who is speaking up and who does not speak? It’s likely that some people often dominate the conversation during meetings and some of the quieter people often remain quiet. Healthy and open workplaces encourage everyone to speak up, and work to ensure that every voice has a chance to be heard. Many people often attempt to address this dynamic by saying, ‘we need to bring the quiet people into the conversation.’ But, there’s a far more effective way, that leverages behavioral science, to achieve more equal dialogue from your team - by nudging the people who are speaking too much to say a bit less. A nudge is a small change in a person’s environment or in how they experience something that can ultimately lead to great changes in behavior. For example, the team leader can say, at the beginning of the meeting, ‘I just want to make sure that I hear from everybody today, so I’m allocating five minutes of time to everybody in the meeting.’ The leader should then explain, ‘I am doing this to ensure that I hear from everybody, and if there’s time left over, we’re going to all leave early and take a coffee break.’ This nudge encourages the people who speak too much to start becoming much more concise. It will also nudge the people who are sitting quietly in the room to come into the room and speak, because the leader has devoted specific time that they’ve given them. This helps to create behavioral change by signaling that other people actually want to hear what they have to say. A special thanks to Dr. Grace Lordan @profgracelordan for this amazing tip to improving meetings, and joining me in this conversation on DEI in the workplace. HOW TO FIND MEANINGFUL MENTORSHIP Very inspiring virtual fireside chat yesterday with @FISGlobal WorldPay team, moderated by the brilliant Reshmi Suresh and Sarah Manson💪 We spoke about activism, resilience, and how to find mentors. I shared how early on in my career, I assumed, like many, that mentorship was a one-way deal meant only to benefit me, the person being mentored. Now, having had many incredible mentors along my professional journey, I have discovered that the most rewarding mentorships are those where both people are learning from each other. I call this ‘mutual mentorship’ with each person learning simultaneously as both a student and a teacher. This means clearly understanding the value that each person can equally bring to the mentorship relationship before reaching out. When you place value on what you can give to others, you signal to them that you know your worth, and they, in turn, will view you as worthy of their time and investment in you. Another important aspect of mentorship is allowing yourself in the more senior role to be mentored by junior team members. During the launch of the @HeForShe movement, emmawatson and my younger tech-savvy team were incredible mentors to me on how to use social media as a tool for activism (while I simultaneously broadened their understanding of international humanitarianism) -- and without a doubt owe the 1.2 BILLION online conversations that #HeForShe generated within its first week of launch to their invaluable contribution. Lastly, we live in a much more connected world, with many of us working in diverse and multi-cultural teams. Mentorship with someone from a different background/gender can be an excellent opportunity to broaden your understanding of the world, challenge your innate biases and prejudices, and gain new perspectives –enabling you to think differently, be more creative, innovative, and successful in your career.Button

HOW TO AVOID FOOD GUILT THIS HOLIDAY SEASON🙌🏾 Does this sound familiar? You’re hungry and open your refrigerator, but nothing looks appealing. So, you jump on your favourite food-delivery app and order your go-to indulgence – a medium margherita pizza – rationalising that tomatoes are at least a vegetable, and healthier than pepperoni. The pizza is hot and crispy, just as you like it. You devour it and are wholly satisfied – but only for a few minutes. Suddenly, a wave of guilt washes over you, and before you know it, it’s no longer about the pizza but everything you hate about your body: the size of your thighs, your stomach, your arms. You begin to count calories, feel awful about the missed gym appointments, and just like that, you fall back into a cycle of self-loathing and food guilt. If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Many women and girls today grapple with food shame. In a world of unrealistic beauty standards and a diet culture fuelled by social media, it’s easy to internalise negative feelings about your body image and, as a result, your eating habits. These feelings of guilt and shame often create a toxic relationship with our food, leading to restrictive diets, food deprivation and binge eating. So as we get ready to celebrate this holiday season, here’s a quick #Nourish check-in to remind us to avoid feeling guilty about eating. As women, we are often told that self-love is the most radical act, especially in a world that places so much value on appearance and perfection. We need, then, to stop putting such moral judgment on eating; food, in general, isn’t ‘bad’. Similarly, you aren’t ‘bad’ for consuming certain foods. Contrary to the restrictive diet culture, your body requires a variety of nutrients to function well, which can only be derived from eating an abundance of food. The goal is to make healthier choices most of the time, while still allowing yourself to indulge some of the time – so go on, enjoy the holiday cake🎂 😋Button

We’ve all been there before. You’re experiencing so much emotional or physical pain that all you want is for someone to acknowledge your suffering. And when no one does, you lash out at a loved one or snap at a colleague as a cry for help, acting entirely out of character. Yet often, many of us rarely take the time to recognize the struggles and suffering of others. Remember, don’t let the rush of life keep you from seeing the struggles of others.🤗 — Story inspired by an #africanfableButton

Delighted that #COP28 has prioritized the link between food security and #climatechange for the first time since the annual climate COP began in 1995 - with the inclusion of a dedicated day for Food, Agriculture, and Water on Dec 10. With these dialogues aiming to showcase innovative policy, finance, technology, and research and development solutions - the inclusion of female voices will be critical. Women have an important role as part of the solution, making up nearly half of all smallholder farmers globally. And as I have witnessed time and time again on the frontlines of global hunger, including during my visit to Honduras, women are the bedrock of food security, often serving as first-line responders in moments of crisis. #foodsystems #foodsecurity #worldfoodprogrammeButton

With #COP28 kicking off tomorrow, I can’t help but reflect on what’s at stake. Climate change isn’t just impacting our environment but is a pressing and real danger to food security globally. In many communities around the world, including my own in Zimbabwe, climate shocks and stresses are undermining people’s ability to feed themselves, destroying crops, livestock, and livelihoods. If we don’t take global action now to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help communities adapt to the new reality of the climate crisis, hunger will increase exponentially. Thus, hoping and praying for better COP outcomes that prioritize the well-being of communities on the frontlines of global hunger, helping them prepare for, respond to, and recover from climate shocks and stresses.Button

Looking for a great cause to donate to this #Giving Tuesday? @CAMFED is educating girls in #Africa. Inequity and injustice prevail when children are denied their fundamental right to an education. A girl excluded from school becomes a woman excluded from all sectors of society, perpetuating the cycle of poverty. She has no choice or say over her own body, her future, or the future of her family. She is excluded from taking part in professions or decision-making bodies that affect her life and well-being and her society at large. DONATE AT CAMFED.org “It takes only $40 to pay for a girl’s school uniform and $150 to fund her education for an entire year.” @murimirwaangieButton

DON’T BE LIKE THE LONELY EXECUTIVE. This National Day of Giving, in addition to giving to your favorite charity - one of the greatest gifts we can give others is to make them feel seen and heard. Wish a complete stranger a great day; say hello to a colleague you often don’t speak to; call a friend to tell them how much you appreciate them; truly connect with a loved one tonight over a meal. In this post-pandemic era, many of us feel disconnected, lonely, and unhappy. So don’t be like the lonely executive; take a moment to connect because giving someone your time and full attention can be as much a gift to yourself. Happy #NationalDayofGiving🙌🏾Button

The perfect PUMPKIN OATMEAL (100% plant-based) Pumpkins aren’t just for pie. Here’s my all-time favorite pumpkin oatmeal recipe, which is not only packed with immune-boosting nutrients but is also decadent and makes for an excellent 100% plant-based Thanksgiving dessert. INGREDIENTS: (2 Servings) * 1/2 cup whole grain oats * 1/2 cup diced pumpkin * 3 cups water * 2 pinches of salt * 1 tangerine, peeled and sliced * 1 mango, peeled and sliced * 4 tbsp coconut milk (optional) * Dash of cinnamon INSTRUCTIONS: 1. In a small saucepan, combine the oats, pumpkin, water, and salt and bring to a boil. Cover and simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally and adding water as needed, until both the pumpkin and oats are perfectly cooked. 2. Plate the oatmeal into 2 bowls and top with the sliced tangerine and mango. Pour 2 tablespoons of the coconut milk (or any non-dairy milk/yogurt of your choice) into each bowl, sprinkle with pumpkin seeds and cinnamon - and serve. 3. Bon appétit 😋Button

“…for so long we have told ourselves a lie — that the more success, the more power, and the more money we have, the happier and more fulfilled our lives will become. But we are soon finding out that this individualistic approach to life is in many ways false. Because despite our accomplishments and success, despite the fleeting moments of happiness, many of us don’t feel fulfilled with our lives. In fact, the more money you make, the more things you want, and the less fulfilled you generally become. We therefore need to rethink what’s important. Perhaps rather than the constant quest for individual pursuits above all else, it’s likely that building community and having a sense of belonging may indeed create more fulfillment in our lives…” —- Such an honor delivering a key note address on ‘Community,’ at the New Hampshire Women’s Foundation annual event — the largest conference on #genderequality in the state. FEELING STRESSED? Practice Mindfulness😌 When stressed, we can either remove ourselves from a stressful situation and/or practice techniques that alleviate stress. Practicing mindfulness is a great way to relieve and manage stress, as it can be done ANYTIME, ANYWHERE, whether eating, walking, working, resting, showering or playing with a child etc. *MINDFULNESS EXERCISE - Attending to these points will help: 1. Start by bringing your attention to the sensations in your body. 2. Breathe in through your nose, allowing the air to fill your lungs. Let your abdomen expand fully. Then, breathe out slowly through your mouth. This pattern may slow down your heart rate and lower your blood pressure, helping you relax. Notice the sensations of each inhalation and exhalation. 3. Proceed with the task at hand slowly and with full deliberation. 4. Engage your senses fully. Notice each sight, touch, and sound so that you savor every sensation. 5. When you notice that your mind has wandered from the task at hand, gently bring your attention back to the sensations of the moment. *Source: Harvard Medical School #Lifestylemedicine #stress #stressresilience #meditation #mindfulnessButton
